Roving Gyms, began as an idea to increase physical health and well being during the winter months, was a response to both the 2014 and 2016 Early Development Instrument (EDI) data. Building upon the community momentum, the Coalition collaborated with other organizations. The need continued and soon the local YMCA integrated the idea into their programming. The success was shared and spread to other Coalitions who invite local experts on brain development to talk to parents about early childhood development. This successful way of building adult capacity and awareness of the early years was featured on CTV and Global News. Connections continue as the Coalition supports the orientation and resources, including additional funding.
The 2017 International Play Association (IPA) conference sparked a lot of conversation around the importance of play in our community of Lethbridge. Stakeholders from several organizations were asking the question, “How do we make play a priority for all children and youth in Lethbridge?” Lethbridge Early Years Coalition (LEYC) decided it was time for action.
