I’m Ready Booklets Translated!

I’m Ready to Translate!
A Linking, Aligning and Leveraging Story
(Spotlight By: Phil Carlton on behalf of ALL OF REGION 7)
In starting conversations and sparking the beginnings of connections, we often can’t anticipate what our outcomes might be. We have ideas and hopes to be sure, but sometimes the actual impact goes far beyond event those! That is exactly what happened when, in my role as Engagement Lead for the First 2000 Days Network, I began a conversation with Beba Svigir, Executive Director of Calgary Immigrant Women Association, and shared our “I Am Ready Booklets” (18 months, 3 years and 5 years). She was most intrigued when I indicated that we unfortunately had not yet uncovered the capacity to support translation of these documents. She told me that CIWA offers a Translation Certification course and that there was a practicum aspect to the course for which the translations of our booklets might be a perfect fit. I thanked her and let her know I would connect CIWA with a couple of the ECCA Coalitions in Calgary. A year later the Coalition Coordinator from the Calgary East Coalition announced that CIWA had translated 12 of the booklets through this program. Couple that with the 3 Booklets that the Northeast Coalition had translated with their own Coalition capacity, and this made 15 booklets. 13 of them (all 3 age groups) have now been formatted to our standard design and now are on the First 2000 Days Network Website ( and can be accessed and printed by any individual or organization – the back pages can even be customized to reflect the local resources of anyone printing them!
The Link was one original meeting just to test the waters, which then lead to Aligning and Leveraging the resources available: the CIWA translation course, Coalition capacity, and Calgary Reads’ design work to produce the outcome of over a dozen (and counting) translated booklets available worldwide. We have requests from as far as New Zealand, Guam, and Botswana for these documents!
