Vulcan County

Vulcan County Early Childhood Development Coalition

Who we are:

Our Mission:
The Vulcan County Early Childhood Development Coalition promotes the development of healthy kids and strong families in a nurturing family friendly environment.

Our Goals:
*Promote the development and well-being of children and families.
*Provide support to programs and services that serve early development areas.
*Provide parents with information on early childhood development.
*Promote understanding of how children’s early years impact lifelong development.
*Support pre-existing initiatives to sustain and strengthen collaboration among partners.

Where we’ve been:

Our Members have worked together to find and address gaps in Vulcan County. We share information with parents and the larger community about the importance of early childhood development. We collaborate as organizations to achieve more together than we could do alone. We do this each year with our Coalition Community Action Plan (CCAP).

Some accomplishments and projects include:
*Play Groups – support establishment of Play Groups to ensure their sustainability. Soft equipment further supports physical activity through play at the groups.
*Family Friendly Businesses – educate, award and celebrate businesses for making adjustments that accomodate families with young children.
*Resource Directories – help the community find and connect to existing resources.
*Activity Wall Board for the Arena – a one of a kind activity board to keep little hands playing while siblings are on the ice.
*Little Libraries – free, “take one, leave one” mini libraries throughout Vulcan County.
*Unplug Challenge – an awareness resource about reducing screen time and increasing play beyond screens.
*Sidewalk and Walking Path Art – Stencils were used in towns and villages to create visual interest outside that appeals to young children and encourages physical and language development.

Where we’re going:

Keeping parents and community members informed about available services, resources and credible research is an important part of what we do. Our Coalition provides:
*A Monthly email of events
*An Early Childhood Calendar
*A Monthly Stakeholder email
*Parent Night Workshops
*Nutrition Workshops in Kindergarten
*Developmental Giveaways – Goody bags are used at community events and for Food Bank clients that contain materials for play and educational handouts for parents.

We collaborate with Coalition Members and other service providers:
*Developmental Check-Ups
*Resource Fair/Mass Registration
*Act4Health Committee

Our membership is open to all of the community and includes representation from health, literacy, libraries, education, child care, family services and parents and grandparents. Come join us as we continue to create and sustain positive change for young children and families. Let’s build a foundation of health and well-being in the early years that will last a lifetime.
