Growing Great Kids Coalition
Who we are:
The Coalition serves to connect families with resources to support early childhood development. Overall, we strive to:
– Be a source for information for parents, caregivers, and professionals;
– Connect community stakeholders and facilitate collaboration;
– Utilize different areas of expertise to plan, problem solve, and collaborate; and
– Support initiatives that help the Hinton community grow great kids!
Where we’ve been:
Growing Great Kids is a community coalition that was founded in August 2012. The Coalition was initiated by a grant from the province to address the Early Development Instrument (EDI) results, which is a standardized tool that measures the development of children during their kindergarten year. In Hinton, the majority of children are developing appropriately, however, there have been concerns about development in the areas of communication, general knowledge, social competence, and physical wellbeing. The Coalition was formed with community stakeholders to address these areas of concern, and operates through a partnership between the Town of Hinton and the Municipality of Jasper.
Where we’re going:
The Growing Great Kids Coalition has been grateful to develop a diverse and knowledgeable group of Coalition Members, including representatives from Alberta Health Services, schools, Parent Link, Family & Community Support Services (FCSS), the local museum, the Library, the Friendship Centre, and other community nonprofits and organizations.
This diverse membership has brought great insights to the group, and has allowed us to be involved with exciting initiatives, including Ages and Stages Questionnaire events, media engagement with local newspapers, offering ‘Gearing Up for Kindergarten’ courses, and two annual Kids Can Catch Fishing Events.
