East Grande Prairie
South Peace Area Rural Kids Early Development (SPARKED)
Who we are:
SPARKED is a committee in the County of Grande Prairie, Alberta promoting positive early childhood development.
Our primary purpose is to promote the importance of the early years and enhance early childhood development in our region. We want to make the County an even better place for children to learn and grow!
We have representation from community members, parents, grandparents, organizations, social agencies and service providers including health care, education, child care, and community services.
SPARKED will voice the needs of young children in the county, including the communities of Bezanson, Clairmont, Dimsdale, Grovedale, Sexsmith, Teepee Creek, Webster, and Whispering Ridge.
The SPARKED Coalition will endeavour to connect service providers to one another, to families with young children, and community to community; and to educate and coordinate services in a proactive and responsible manner to enhance the social, cultural and physical well-being of children in our communities.
Where we’ve been:
SPARKED was established in 2011 as part of Alberta Education’s Early Child Development Mapping Project (ECMap), a provincial research and community development project that helped Albertans better understand how their young children are doing and work together to support healthy development.
The first five years of a child’s life are the most critical period in development and have a life-long impact on learning, behaviour, health, work, relationships and well-being.
Where we’re going:
With input from our communities, we are creating a plan to promote existing assets, advocate the improvement and development of community resources, and serve as a supportive network for families, caregivers and educators of young children in our region.
SPARKED continues to be involved in the early childhood development community by taking part in various events and activities in our area.
SPARKED hosts the ‘Look At Me, I Am 3!’ annual event, a National Child Day annual event, a Family Literacy Day event, and partners with others to create fun and informative initiatives like Summer Play Days, Peace Parks Passport, Welcome to Kindergarten Bags, and more!
One of the goals of SPARKED is to have representatives from each of our communities on board. Current and future members have opportunities to voice their community’s needs, address issues highlighting local early learning opportunities, community assets, and resources.
