Drumheller & Area
The Drumheller & Area Early Childhood Development (DECD) Coalition
Who we are:
The DECD Coalition is a volunteer group of family service providers & community members working towards strengthening and promoting Early Childhood Development in our area.
Because …The first five years last a lifetime!
Our vision is that all children in Drumheller and Area will reach their full potential through nurturing relationships with their family and supported by a community committed to their success. Every child will be happy, healthy and prepared for success in life.
We collaborate and work in partnership with community stakeholders to identify gaps and shared goals that focus on improving outcomes for children and families.
Our Coalition group meets on a monthly basis. Subcommittees meet to work on current and ongoing work plan projects. Members choose work plan projects that they feel align best with their interests, strengths and talents.
Where we’ve been:
Drumheller and Area Early Childhood Development (DECD) Coalition was established in 2011 as an outcome of the provincial ECMap Research Project when a group of community members and service providers from Drumheller and surrounding communities gathered to form a Coalition and applied for a grant.
We currently receive grant funding through Early Childhood Coalitions Alberta (ECCA) and our community work is aligned with the outcomes under four priority areas: Knowledge Mobilization & Communication, Community & Stakeholder Engagement, Collaborative Planning & Partnership and Coalition Development.
We believe that strong collaborative partnerships with community stakeholders are key to raising happy, healthy, successful children in the early years. We work to increase early childhood development awareness and accessibility of supports and resources for families. We believe that 0 -5 years is the critical time in a child’s life to ensure children reach their full potential and are ready to succeed in school and life. It takes a community to raise a child.
The work of the DECD Coalition has been and continues to be focused on:
1. Raising awareness
-Actively promote available resources and supports for parents, service providers and the community at large.
-Educate all community members about the importance of early childhood development and the importance of investing in the early years.
-Educate parents about how to optimally support their child’s development.
-Work in partnership with community stakeholders to identify needs and strengths.
-Provide support to families that enhance the healthy development of children 0 – 5 years through collaborative partnerships.
Where we’re going:
Our Coalition is a group of dedicated and passionate members who are committed to create and sustain positive change for young children and families in our community & surrounding area that will last a lifetime.
Our Coalition brand and logo are recognized by the communities we serve from the visibility of our work throughout the years.
Our Coalition hosts an annual Early Years Info Fair every October with over 20 community & area service providers coming together to share early development resources, programs and services available to families raising children birth to five years. We will be hosting our 8th annual Early Years Info Fair this October (2019). Our annual Early Years Info Fair is well known to families as an anticipated annual event. We also provide a community Early Childhood Resource List and champion Indoor Free Play on Sundays during the winter months.
We will be hosting a ‘Dinner & Dialogue’ event for the opportunity to engage community, to gather, celebrate and collaboratively plan next steps for ECD services in the community. We are excited to be including our business community partners to help us advance ECD awareness discussions.
Our team is excited to be developing, distributing and promoting a children’s picture book that encourages families to explore the Drumheller area together through activities that highlight the five domains.
Our team will be getting involved with the Drumheller Poverty Reduction Alliance to explore how to better support families with children experiencing poverty.
Our Coalition will be developing some ECD information that will be included in the Town of Drumheller’s Welcoming Committee packages that will be given to all new families arriving in Drumheller.
Our membership is open to anyone who has a passionate commitment to the well-being of children and families.
