Calgary Downtown

Calgary Downtown Coalition

Who we are:

Vision: Children from conception to six are supported by family and community to reach their optimal development in the following five areas: physical health and well-being, emotional maturity, social competence, language and thinking skills, and communication and general knowledge.
Mission: We focus on putting research into practice about brain development, the importance of reading to children in the early years, engaging and building capacity in parents and the community in general. The Downtown Coalition acts as a catalyst to link, align and leverage strength based approaches that promote healthy child development in community.

Where we’ve been:

The Calgary Downtown Coalition is a collective response of community members, organizations and professionals who live or work in the downtown zone and have a passion for making progress on our vision and mission.

Our Coalition formed in 2011 with the coming together in the downtown area of Calgary of passionate players concerned with ECD. We have been meeting regularly since then and have developed feedback loops and many opportunities to share stories and leverage successes.

The open, transparent learning culture that has developed among a core group of members has allowed us to connect existing ECD initiatives within our area to better coordinate actions and share and build on learnings, research and evaluation. Together, we have engaged community through newsletters, Cafe-style conversations, workshops and events to build understanding of the importance of the early years, and the value of working together to improve outcomes for all young children within our Coalition’s boundaries.

Where we’re going:

The work of our Coalition is focused on increasing awareness about three key areas of early childhood development::

the importance of play
the role of early literacy
the impact of technology on the developing brain.
With these key areas of ECD as our starting points, we will develop social media posts, newsletter articles and other tools and resources for sharing at workshops and community events that are planned to bring together parents in our community and the organizations that serve them.
In working together on these activities, resources and events, we will not only strengthen our knowledge mobilization and communication efforts. In addition, we will also increase our levels of collaborative planning and outreach to our community, and further sustain the development of a strong Coalition.
